Politicians love it. Sports fans go wild. But hosting the Games is a costly business. As the 2020 host city is unveiled today, The Daily Beast's Nico Hines on London's terrible legacy.

WHAT MAKES PEOPLE BAD?

At Nuremberg, 24 of the highest-ranking Nazis were put on trial, but behind the scenes they were also being analyzed by leading American psychologists to figure out the root of their evil. Thomas Harding on what they discovered.

Violence

As Secretary of State John Kerry lobbied U.S. allies to support a strike in Syria, the Syrian government shelled rebels just south of Damascus, activists claim. The shelling on Saturday reportedly claimed 16 lives, including 14 rebels, an adult civilian and a child. The activists, from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also report heavy fighting continuing around the village of Maaloula.

Victory

"From today I declare that Australia is under new management," said Australia's new prime minister Friday night. Tony Abbott won the country's general election in a landslide, returning the General-National coalition to power for the first time in six years. Projections show the coalition winning 91 seats in Parliament, with the Labor party snagging just 55. The previous parliament featured 71 Labor seats and 72 for the coalition. Prime Minister and Labor leader Kevin Rudd conceded the election, saying that he would not attempt to retain the leadership of his party because the country's citizens "deserve a fresh start."

too little too late

Another twist in the already sickening story of Ohio kidnapper Ariel Castro came on Friday. According to interrogation tapes obtained by NBC, Castro called the mother of victim Amanda Berry at some point after the initial kidnapping and told her that Berry was O.K. and was now his wife. The tapes show Castro discussing the call, saying he hung up on Berry's mother "so we didn't have a conversation." He also pointed out multiple failed efforts on the part of authorities to find him, including watching the surveillance cameras from outside victim Gina DeJesus's school. Castro hung himself in his prison cell a month after being sentenced to life plus 1,000 years.
