Summer's End

Autumn, once again, does the heavy literary lifting for the year, giving readers treat after treat. From Norman Rush's Subtle Bodies, 10 years in the making, to Bill Bryson's One Summer: America, 1927—curiously not released during the summer—here are the 21 best book releases of the fall to start looking forward to.

Sorry, Dad

The fishing license flub, the gay-marriage fight with sister Mary—it's been a cringe-inducing few months for the Senate candidate. Now she's getting cheers for opposing Obama's Syria resolution. The Daily Beast's Michelle Cottle wonders: what will dad say?

Blast

Egyptian interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim narrowly escaped an assassination attempt Thursday when a car bomb exploded in front of his convoy as he was leaving his home, wounding a total of 22 people. Ibraham had received reports earlier this week that assassins planned to kill him, but no one has claimed the attack so far. Ibrahim has been at the center of managing the military's violent crackdown on supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi. He warned after the bombing that a wave of terrorism by Morsi supporters was possible in the wake of the crackdown.

Allies?

As the U.S. debates whether to intervene on behalf of the rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad in Syria, evidence continues to mount that the resistance has adopted many of Assad's brutal tactics. A new video leaked by a disaffected rebel shows his comrades performing a ritual execution of captured Syrian soldiers, teasing them before killing them with point-blank gunfire to the head. Across Syria, guerrilla fighter groups and criminal gangs have joined the rough rebel coalition. Secretary of State John Kerry has downplayed the role of Islamic extremists and other "bad guys" in the opposition, but U.S. representatives say their briefings on the war showed the opposition's dark side more clearly.

HUGE

Hooray! Americans seeking unemployment dropped to 323,000 from 332,000 a week ago, making it the lowest level since October 2007. The four-week average declined 3,000 to 328,500, and economists are forecasting that employers added 177,000 jobs in August, an increase of 15,000 in July alone. And while there are still a large number of Americans unemployed, a private survey released Tuesday indicated factory activity increased in July at the fastest pace in more than two years.

NSFW: We'll Never Let Go, Jack!

With rumors flying that Jack Nicholson will be retiring from his career of almost 60 years, we got a little nostalgic for some of his best moments. There's a lot of innuendo, even more cursing, a whole lot of yelling, and we appreciate every bit of it.
