NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden revealed that the agency searches through emails and text messages into and out of the country sent to and from foreigners under surveillance by the government. But now officials admit the surveillance is much broader: it searches Americans' communications without warrants for just mentions of the individuals under surveillance, whether or not the person being spied on has any direct contact. The cross-border surveillance was authorized by a 2008 law that required the "target" to be a foreigner abroad, but leaves vague what that means. The NSA said the spying is legal and limited.

BLAZE
California's wildfire season raged on on Wednesday, when a fire raced through several mountain communities in Riverside County, destroying homes and forcing residents to flee. Dubbed the Silver Fire, it was reported at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. By 5:30 p.m., it had burned 5,000 acres, said the Riverside County Fire Department. "It exploded this afternoon, really due to the fact that conditions are critically dry across California," spokesman for Cal Fire Daniel Berlant said. Two firefighters and one civilian have been injured and more than 100 homes are in danger.

RAMPAGE

Four people are dead and four more are wounded after two shootings in the Dallas metro area late Wednesday night. Police were called to a house in southeast Dallas at 10:30 p.m., after a suspect shot four people. The suspect had fled by the time they arrived, but shortly surfaced in DeSoto, a suburb. There, the shooter attacked four more people, two of whom were later pronounced dead. DeSoto police said he was taken into custody at the scene; four victims remain hospitalized.
