EXCLUSIVE

Just after receiving a sentence of 35 years in prison for transmitting hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables and U.S. Army reports to WikiLeaks in 2010, Bradley Manning was in a surprisingly "cheerful mood," according to his attorney. "He said, 'Hey It's OK. It's alright. I know you did everything you could for me. Don't cry. Be happy. It's fine. This is just a stage in my life. I am moving forward. I will recover from this,'" his defense lawyer David Coombs told The Daily Beast in an interview conducted immediately after the sentencing.

'KREMLIN PROPAGANDA'

Clad in rainbow-striped suspenders, American reporter James Kirchick was kicked off a show on Russian TV after protesting the country's antihomosexuality laws and declining to speak about the Bradley Manning verdict. "Being here on a Kremlin-funded propaganda network, I'm going ... to speak out against the horrific, antigay legislation that Vladimir Putin has signed into law," he said. A host for RT, which is a government-funded network, explained after that since Kirchick was not speaking on the present topic, "we had to take him off air." Kirchick later tweeted that "RT just called taxi company that took me to studio to drop me off on the side of the highway."

BIG BROTHER

The National Security Agency's surveillance program is even larger than has been previously disclosed, sources told The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. The system can reach roughly 75 percent of all U.S. Internet traffic, including communication between Americans and foreigners. Codenamed Blarney, Fairview, Oakstar, Lithium, and Stormbrew, the programs are carried out with telecom companies, and filter and gather information from the communications. Although the programs' main goal is to intercept foreign terrorists' communication, sources say it's purely domestic communication that is more likely to be incidentally intercepted. A U.S. official insisted, however, that the NSA is "not wallowing willy-nilly" through Americans' chatter, and "we want high-grade ore."

SEAL OF APPROVAL

More support for the already heavily favored Cory Booker, this time from President Obama, who said the Newark mayor and Senate candidate would be "an important partner in our efforts to reduce gun violence, give every American a fair shot in a global economy, and make our country stronger." Booker is facing off against Republican Steve Lonegan in a special election next month for the seat vacated by the late Democratic senator Frank Lautenberg. Booker, whose campaign team is full of strategists from Obama's reelection campaign, said he was "humbled" by the endorsement. Booker is widely seen as a strong potential presidential candidate, if not in 2016 then in later races.

HAVING IT ALL

They work. They raise their kids. And they do it all solo. For the growing ranks of older single moms, opting out doesn't compute. The Daily Beast's Paula Szuchman on the ones who opt in forever—and aren't complaining.

Twitter Weeps for Bradley Manning

The public has spoken out about the leaker's 35-year prison sentence, and they're overwhelmingly angry, disgusted, and disillusioned. We combed through hundreds of tweets, and we didn't see a single one that expressed anti-Manning sentiment.
