LET'S CALL HER OLD

Republicans are preparing to attack Clinton for being old. The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky on why it will probably backfire.

HEROES

Nineteen firefighters from a single elite crew were killed Sunday night battling a wildfire in Yarnell, Arizona, in the deadliest day for firefighters since September 11, 2001. One member of the 20-person Prescott-based crew, called the Granite Mountain Hotshots, survived because he was in a different location at the time. Authorities said they believe the firefighters died while trying deploy their fire shelter, which is made up of tents designed to trap breathable air and shield the firefighters. The fire, which investigators believe was started by lightning, has already burned through 700 acres and destroyed more than 200 buildings in the town. In a statement, President Obama called the firefighters "heroes," while Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer called the deaths "an unimaginable loss" and said that Sunday was "as dark a day as I can remember."

FAKE STORY

Not only did The Guardian's sister publication base a cover story—later pulled—on a single paranoid conspiracist, the reporter failed even to speak with him. But the story's still percolating online, says The Daily Beast's Michael Moynihan.

EGYPT

Protesters in Cairo on Monday stormed the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood, President Mohamed Morsi's party, as the demonstration against Morsi's government grew to the largest crowds since the 2011 revolution. No one was in the building at the time. Millions are estimated to have joined in the demonstrations across the country that coincided with the first anniversary of Morsi's inauguration, and eight were reportedly killed on Sunday. Tamarod, the main opposition group, issued a statement demanding Morsi's resignation—and said he would face a campaign of civil disobedience if he did not step down. Tamarod collected more than 22 million signatures—more than a quarter of the country's population—of support.

WELCOME

The European Union needed some good news after finding out its Brussels offices may have been bugged by the U.S. Croatia officially joined the EU on Monday, becoming the 28th member. Croatia's capital, Zagreb, celebrated Monday with fireworks, cheering crowds, and the opening of the border with Slovenia, another former Yugoslav country in the EU. The move comes almost 20 years after the country's brutal war for independence from Yugoslavia. More than two thirds of Croatians said they were excited for the ascension, despite the euro zone's flagging economy and Croatia's own economic problems. Concerns over Croatia's corruption and economy will keep the country from joining the euro.

J.Lo From the Soviet Bloc

Just because you have a terrible human rights record doesn't mean you can't throw a great party. That was at least the thinking behind the 56th birthday bash for Turkmenistan's president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, where Jennifer Lopez performed.
