Maybe if the National Security Agency had noticed the Boston bomber's visits to al Qaeda's magazine or "terrorist" YouTube videos and stopped him, Edward Snowden wouldn't have become a leaker, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Daly. Plus, Eli Lake talks to NSA officials about Snowden, "digital Cassandra" Lawrence Lessig on how it's time to rewrite the Internet for better privacy, and a breakdown on how pundits and politicians feel about Snowden.

WELL WISHES

Jonathan Mills sends his love to his daughter and her boyfriend, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Mills told reporters Tuesday evening that he isn't sure of his daughter Lindsay's whereabouts—though he has been in touch with her via text message—or Snowden's. "I know more from your reports than from anywhere else," he said. Mills described Snowden, who had been dating his daughter for about four or five years, as "very nice—shy, reserved," and said of his whistleblowing, "He's always had strong convictions right along, and it kind of made sense, but it's still a shock."

MESSY TRUTH

The iconic litigator, glorified by Julia Roberts in a 2000 movie, was arrested for drunkenly handling a boat this weekend. The Daily Beast's Eliza Shapiro on the unglamorous trouble behind the famous name.

MANDATORY EVACUATIONS

Raging wildfires have prompted a mandatory evacuation order for about 5,000 homes across 24,000 acres in Colorado. "Complacency is a dangerous gamble," El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said, and noted that some people were ignoring the evacuation order, while others were having a hard time getting out of their homes. "We have some folks that were having difficulty. We are focused on our elderly population that may have difficulty moving and people trying to move animals out. It has gone from an evac to somewhat of a search and rescue." Over 150 firefighters alongside members of the National Guard were sent to take on the flames, which had burned at least 7,500 acres by Tuesday night. Several structures have been burned, but no deaths are reported so far.

DISTURBINGLY QUIET

Tuesday's night of violence between police and demonstrators in Istanbul's Taksim Square has left an eerie calm over the area Wednesday, with traffic resuming and new police squads taking the place of those who'd spent the night firing water cannons and tear gas at protesters. Despite promises that police would not attempt to remove people from the square, the overnight clashes came after Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered an end to the nearly two weeks of demonstrations that evolved from an environmental crusade to save a beloved park into an anti-government protest. As of Monday, the protests have sent 4,947 people to the hospital for a variety of injuries, and four people—including a police officer—have died.

When Obama Reads Your Email

It's funny because it's true ... kind of. The new Tumblr 'Obama is Checking Your Email' pokes fun at the internet monitoring issue with pics of POTUS looking at people's laptops and phones. As the pictures show, nothing is quite as important to the president as what's in your inbox.
