Anthony Sowell was sentenced to death in 2011 after raping and killing 11 Cleveland women. Read the shocking details of how that case—much like this week's escape of three kidnapping victims—raises questions about Cleveland police's failure to follow clues, says The Daily Beast's Michael Daly. Plus, David Freedlander on Amanda Berry's 911 dispatcher, Christine Pelisek talks to Castro's neighbors about what they saw, and Caroline Linton on other survivors of kidnappings.

CREEPY

Ariel Castro, the man who lived in the house where three women were found alive Monday after being missing for over a decade apiece, had participated in vigils for Gina DeJesus, one of the women found in house. DeJesus, who went missing in 2004 at the age of 14, was discovered at Castro's Cleveland house along with Amanda Berry, 27, missing since 2003, and Michelle Knight, 32, missing since 2002. Castro's daughter, Arlene Castro, also spoke to America's Most Wanted in 2005 about DeJesus's disappearance, and Castro's son, Anthony, wrote about it for a local newspaper in 2004. Police have not yet charged Castro, 52, or his brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, who have all been arrested in connection to the kidnappings.

TALK ABOUT A COMEBACK

It seems neither a sex scandal nor an endorsement from Hustler can ruin your political chances. Mark Sanford has won South Carolina's special election, beating Elizabeth Colbert Busch for a seat in the House of Representatives, according to an Associated Press call. The Republican led with 54 percent. Even the GOP fundraisers had given up on Sanford after his ex-wife's trespassing allegations against him surfaced, leaving Colbert Busch with a 5-to-1 outside spending advantage. Now that's what we call a comeback.

ALLEGATIONS

Get ready for some fireworks on Capitol Hill—and Mark Sanford hasn't even arrived yet. House Republicans plan on revealing new evidence on Wednesday that they say shows the White House could have done more to prevent the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. A State Department whistleblower is expected to testify Wednesday that former U.S. secretary of State Hillary Clinton was personally involved in the decision not to immediately classify the attack as terrorism. Democrats say the House Oversight Committee's focus on Benghazi is politically motivated—especially with poll numbers showing Clinton has up to 65 percent of her party's support if she decides to run for president in 2016.

TALK-SHOW SLUMP

The fight between El Rushbo and the flagship carrier of his show is a symptom of conservative talk's bigger problems. The Daily Beast's John Avlon reports.
