The Italian parliament has failed to elect a new president in its first vote on Thursday. No single candidate won a two-third majority of the votes; another round is due to take place later in the day.

German tank producer secures huge order from Qatar
German defense company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann said it has received an order from Qatar worth almost 2 billion euros ($2.61 billion). The company is set to deliver tanks and other vehicles.

German think tanks revise down growth forecast
Germany's four leading economic research institutes have pared back their growth forecast for Europe's largest economy. They said growth would stay below the previously expected rate, but were more positive about 2014.
