NOT SO FAST, NRA

The NRA may have won a temporary victory, but it can't keep winning forever. Eventually, predicts Michael Tomasky, gun control advocates are going to prevail.

Get Well Soon!

Mandela Hospital Watch is over for now: Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid activist and former South African president, was discharged from the hospital on Saturday after spending a week there to be treated for pneumonia. The 94-year-old Nobel laureate, who stepped down as president in 1999, now counts three health scares in the past four months, as he was briefly hospitalized in March and underwent a long hospitalization in December for gallstone surgery. Feel better soon!

Personhood

Just a week after North Dakota's lawmakers approved a package of sweeping anti-abortion measures, Kansas is making its own mark. The state's legislature passed a bill Friday night that includes a declaration that life begins "at fertilization," a ban on sex-based abortion, and also blocks tax breaks for abortion providers. The bill was approved by the state House of Representatives, 90-30, just hours after it passed through the Senate, 28-10. Governor Sam Brownback is expected to sign the measure, which would likely take effect in July.

Calming Down

As the situation with North Korea continues, the United States is leaning on the country's only major ally to step in. The Obama administration has been working with China to handle its small ally, counting on China's increasing frustration with Pyongyang. The administration has briefed Chinese officials on American plans to upgrade missile defenses in the area, among other deterrence strategies. Although China has been wary of American attempts to reassert itself in Asia, it is also aware of already-strained ties.
