Seven hostages 'killed' as army storms Algeria gas plant
Seven hostages were killed by militants during an army assault at the In Amenas gas plant, according to Algeria's state news agency. Special forces also killed 11 Islamist militants after a four-day standoff, it said.

West African bloc calls for international support in Mali
West Africa's main political bloc has called for more international support, as it prepares to join the French intervention in Mali. Paris has said that African troops must lead the fight against the Islamists.

Gun pointed during Bulgarian party rally
A veteran Turkish minority party leader in Bulgaria has escaped unharmed after a gunman took close aim during a televised speech in Sofia. Guards tackled the 25-year-old assailant whose gun did not discharge.

UN achieves treaty to limit mercury
More than 140 nations have adopted the first treaty to reduce mercury emissions. The agreement will set limits on emissions of the highly toxic metal that is widely used in chemical production and small-scale mining.

School tones down plagiarism claims against minister
The University of Düsseldorf is toning down its allegations of plagiarism against Education Minister Annette Schavan, according to a German newspaper. Claims she had plagiarized parts of her doctorate emerged last year.

Berlin protest slams industrialized farming
Opponents of industrialized agriculture have converged on Chancellor Angela Merkel's chancellery. A lead speaker slammed Berlin's current "Green Week" trade fair as a façade for "million-fold" animal suffering.

Falkland Islanders to vote in referendum on future
Residents of the Falkland Islands are set to vote in a referendum on whether they wish to remain a UK territory. The move comes amid renewed tensions over Argentina's claim to the islands.
