HACK ATTACK

Amateur hackers or Iranian pros? Clues suggest the most recent cyber-attack on the International Atomic Energy Agency may be more than a prank. The Daily Beast's Eli Lake reports.

'TRANSFORMATION'

We know 11,000 people who aren't too excited about these "transformations." Citigroup announced that it will absorb a tax charge of $1 billion for the quarter and eliminate about 11,000 jobs. The CEO of the third-biggest U.S. bank said that the move was a "logical" step in the bank's transformation. Under the reduction, 1,900 jobs will be eliminated in the institutional clients division, 6,200 will be removed from the consumer banking business, and 2,600 in the operations and technology group. The announcement comes amid internal turmoil: last month, Citigroup's chairman pushed out the chief executive, Vikram Pandit, and handpicked Pandit's successor. That move came one day after the bank reported higher-than-expected third-quarter earnings.

SNUBBED

Speaker Boehner declined to be photographed with President Obama at a holiday party. The Daily Beast's Michelle Cottle on the roots of political pettiness–and what Boehner should do next year.

Back and Forth

House Speaker John Boehner told a closed meeting of his Republican colleagues that if President Obama is against the GOP counteroffer, the president "has a responsibility to put forward a plan that can pass both chambers of Congress," according to sources in the room. President Obama has indicated he will not meet with Boehner until he agrees to some tax increases. The two have reportedly not spoken in a week, and their respective staffs have not communicated in several days. Boehner said, "If the president is serious about averting the fiscal cliff, he's done nothing to demonstrate it."

Asylum

Syria's ambassador to Venezuela has denied reports that President Bashar al-Assad is thinking of fleeing to Latin America. Haaretz had reported that Syria's deputy foreign minister held meetings in Cuba, Venezuela, and Ecuador last week and that he brought personal letters from Assad to the country's leaders. But Syria's ambassador to Venezuela said: "It is not worth honoring these claims with a response. You can ask our Venezuelan counterparts. In several interviews Assad has said he was born in Syria and will die in Syria. Right now he is not afraid. He is in a strong position. There is no probability that this news is true."
