Not just for the birds: Human-made noise has ripple effects on plants, too

Posted: 20 Mar 2012 04:57 PM PDT

A growing body of research shows that animals change their behavior in response to human-made noise. But human clamor doesn't just affect animals. Because many animals also pollinate plants or eat or disperse their seeds, human noise can have ripple effects on plants too, finds a new study. In cases where noise has ripple effects on long-lived plants like trees, the consequences could last long after the source of the noise goes away, researchers say.

Findings from a first-of-its-kind study confirm anecdotal evidence that exercise -- absent sex or fantasies -- can lead to female orgasm. "These data are interesting because they suggest that orgasm is not necessarily a sexual event, and they may also teach us more about the bodily processes underlying women's experiences of orgasm," said a researcher involved in the study.

Japanese honeybees swarm huge hornet predator to kill it with heat

Japanese honeybees face a formidable foe in the Asian giant hornet, a fierce predator that can reach 40mm long or larger, but the bees have developed a novel defense mechanism: they create a "hot defensive bee ball," swarming around the hornet and literally cooking it. Now, a new study uncovers some of the neural activity that underlies this unusual behavior, which is not practiced by the Japanese honeybee's European relative.
