Cheat Sheet - Penn State Beefs Up Security for Game Day

Today: Obama Puts Heat on Supercommittee, Palestine Statehood Bid Stalls, Cain's Wife to Sit for Interview

GAME DAY

Penn State is preparing for a fraught game today, with extra security brought on in case of a repeat of this week's student protests over Joe Paterno's firing. It's not clear whether Paterno will attend the game. As the school remains in turmoil over a growing sexual-abuse scandal, The Daily Beast's Nick Summers investigates media and court records and reveals a football program dogged by allegations of sexual aggression. And Paterno's failure to report alleged assault by Jerry Sandusky was not the first time the coach appeared to have an ambiguous approach toward sexual misconduct.

PARTING SHOT

En route to Hawaii for a nine-day tour of Australia and Indonesia, President Obama called the Democratic and Republican chairmen of the deficit supercommittee and urged them to reach a deal. If the supercommittee doesn't report its plan for cutting the deficit by Nov. 23, four days after Obama gets back, automatic and painful cuts will begin—and Obama said in the call that he wouldn't allow Congress to work around the penalty cuts. Politico sees the move as an attempt to get distance from Congress and send the message that it's their problem to solve.

LOSING STEAM

The United Nations Security Council is unable to make a unanimous decision about Palestine's push for statehood, officially stalling the bid Friday. The United States has emphatically stated that it will veto a Palestinian bid, something the Palestinian envoy to the U.N. recognized would be a significant obstacle to reaching success in the Security Council. "We thought with diligent diplomatic efforts, with success at the UNESCO, of being admitted in the U.N. system as the state of Palestine…that Palestine would be admitted as a member state," he said. According to CNN, diplomats say it's up to Palestine to push for a statehood vote but the chances that it will get even the nine minimum votes necessary to pass through the Security Council seems unlikely.

DEBUT

Looks like Herman Cain's wife will be doing a television interview after all. Gloria Etchison Cain will sit with Greta Van Susteren on Fox News for a taping that could air Monday, sources tell The New York Times. Gloria has not yet appeared on the campaign trail with her husband, but it has been rumored lately that she would make a televised defense of her husband against the sexual harassment allegations being made against him. Cain's been talking publicly about his wife more often recently. He told reporters that he called her after the news conference with one of his accusers, Sharon Bialek. "I said, 'Hello, sweetheart, did you see that interview?'" Cain said. "She used some language that I've never heard her use before."

RESCUE

Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos is freed after being held for two days by kidnappers in Venezuela. Details on his rescue are sketchy, but it seems Venezuelan police exchanged heavy fire with his kidnappers in a remote mountain area 40 miles northwest of Ramos' family's home in Valencia, where four men abducted him at gunpoint Wednesday. News of his rescue set off celebrations at ballfields across Venezuela.
