Her anti-gay platform has alienated parts of her family. A mentor she described as a "great influence" has a history of addresses to white supremacists. A book she collaborated on advocates theocracy. Rep. Michele Bachmann's impressive performance at Monday's debate has catapulted her near the front of the GOP pack, but the radical roots of her ideology remain poorly understood. The Daily Beast's Michelle Goldberg reports.
In the U.S., they'd get a medal. Pakistan's top spy agency has arrested five informants who fed information to the American CIA and helped bring down Osama bin Laden. The five detainees, including one man who wrote down license plate numbers of cars entering bin Laden's compound, were key in helping U.S. intelligence gather enough information to storm the late al Qaeda chief's home. The arrests are further evidence of the weak ties between the two countries; the U.S. would rather see Pakistan detain al Qaeda operatives as opposed to those who help bring them down.

When same-sex legislation was last before the state senate, the GOP voted against it en masse. Three Democrats who also previously opposed the bill have indicated they will switch their votes. A vote is likely for Friday.

For example, the release included just five emails from Palin's first month in office. Palin and her staff often used private accounts for official communications. Alaska did not offer a timetable for when it would know more about the apparently missing emails.
The massive wildfire in Arizona broke an ominous record Tuesday, becoming the state's largest-ever blaze. However, the thousands of firefighters charged with containing it claimed some progress, calling it close to 20 percent contained. The fire has spread into New Mexico, and continues to grow. It has destroyed 32 buildings but so far has caused no serious injuries.
The ATF's Operation Fast and Furious sparked outrage by allowing hundreds of weapons from U.S. gun shops to be trafficked to Mexican drug gangsand left one border agent dead. With House hearings today, John Solomon exclusively traces the origin of the sting to the Justice Department, which originally denied involvement.
