CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

BIN LADEN'S DEATH
1. Pakistan is Playing Dumb

The Islamabad establishment has been feigning ignorance for years while
dissidents disappear by the thousands and hoarding landlords gouge food
prices. Fatima Bhutto on the price ordinary Pakistanis pay as their
leaders allow the country to fall apart.

SHOWDOWNS
2. Pakistan: No More Raids

This must give Ayman al Zawahiri a little bit of comfort: Pakistan's
army chief and a top diplomat are warning the U.S. that it could face
military resistance if it attempts another operation like the one that
killed Osama bin Laden. The Pakistani foreign secretary warns of
"terrible consequences," while the military said it will consider
cutting off anti-terror cooperation if there's another raid. Pakistan
sent two F-16 fighter jets to the bin Laden compound when it learned of
the operation - but by that point the Navy SEALs were already gone. Some
U.S. intelligence officials believe members of the Pakistani army
knowingly aided bin Laden.

MASTERMINDS
3. Bin Laden Led Al Qaeda from Hideout

Osama bin Laden spent the last five years of his life in just two rooms
- he never stepped outside them, says one of his wives - and yet he was
able to remain closely involved in al Qaeda business. Notes recovered
from his compound show, for example, that he was involved in a plot to
try to derail a U.S. train on a bridge on the tenth anniversary of 9/11.
"He wasn't just a figurehead," one U.S. official tells The New York
Times. "He continued to plot and plan, to come up with ideas about
targets and to communicate those ideas to other senior Qaeda leaders."

2012 RACE
4. GOP Holds First Presidential Debate

Republican presidential hopefuls attacked President Obama's foreign
policy at the first debate of the 2012 election on Thursday night -
although the debate was most notable for its lack of big-name
contenders. A main bone of contention was Obama's decision not to show
photos of Osama bin Laden's corpse. Several of the contenders, including
Rep. Ron Paul (who argued on behalf of government transparency) and
former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty ("It would have been OK,") insisted
that they would have released the grisly shots. The debate, sponsored by
the South Carolina Republican Party and Fox News, featured five
potential candidates - Paul, Pawlenty, former New Mexico Gov. Gary
Johnson, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, and businessman and
former pizza magnate Herman Cain. There were many notable absences:
Sarah Palin, Jon Huntsman, Donald Trump, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and
Newt Gingrich—many of whom have expressed interest in running, something
Cain criticized by saying, "The first rule in leadership is you have to
show up."

MIDDLE EAST
5. Syrians Prep 'Day of Defiance'

After a 10-day massacre, the Syrian government has withdrawn tanks from
Daraa - and Syrian activists are already preparing to head back onto the
streets Friday for a "day of defiance." The withdrawal of the tanks does
not mean the day will not be violent: Security forces are reported to be
gathering in other cities, including Baniyas, which has been the site of
previous demonstrations. Armored personnel carriers and tanks have been
seen near Baniyas, causing some residents to fear a siege like the one
in Daraa. More than 500 Syrians have died during the crackdown over the
last seven weeks.
