Although many inside the Beltway dismissed Cruz's 21-hour speech as a stunt, polls show that his name recognition has jumped 20 percentage points since June—but his unfavorably ratings also jumped 18 percentage points. Indian Stampede Kills 89 At least 89 people were killed Sunday in a stampede near a Hindu temple in central India—just one day after a huge cyclone forced nearly 600,000 people to flee their homes. According to witnesses, panic broke out as thousands pilgrims tried to cross a bridge on the Sindh river in Madhya Pradesh, with some of the victims being trampled to death and others dying as they tried to jump off the bridge into the river. Local officials said the cause of panic is still under investigation, but some witnesses pointed to rumors of the bridge giving way, while others blamed police using batons to control the crowd.  The deadly stampede came just one day after the strongest cyclone in 14 years slammed India's eastern coast, leaving a path of destruction by largely sparing lives. A cousin of Angelica Castillo, the four-year-old girl found strangled and bound in a cooler along a New York City highway in 1991, confessed Saturday to killing the girl and sexually abusing her. Conrado Juarez, 52, told police he sexually assaulted the girl while staying at her family's crowded Queens apartment, and reportedly strangled her with a pillow when she tried to scream. The 22-year-old cold case got its first big break in decades this summer when a tipster came forward with information about Angelica's sister. The tip eventually led police to the girl's mother, who failed to report her missing because she feared the girl's abusive father.
