Cheat Sheet - The Weirdest Wimbledon Yet

Today: The Inside Story of the CIA and the NYPD , Obama Not Stressing Over Snowden , Hernandez Set to Appear in Court
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

June 27, 2013
CARNAGE ON THE COURT

Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova got creamed by low-ranked players. Rafael Nadal was bested by a player ranked No. 135 in the world. And the injuries just keep coming. Nicholas McCarvel reports from Wimbledon, where the insane carnage might just be beginning.

THE INSIDE STORY

A New York Times report is shedding new light on the "secret anti-terror operation" allegedly carried out by the NYPD and the CIA. The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey reports on the two agencies' hidden bond.

SCRAMBLIN' JETS

The media might be obsessed with leaker Edward Snowden, but President Obama isn't stressing. Speaking in Senegal, Obama dismissed the whistleblower's importance to the administration, saying he hadn't attempted any deals with Russia or China for his return and that he was "not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker." Obama went on to assert that the programs are legal and have proper oversight. Bruised pride aside, looks like Snowden, reportedly still hiding out in a Moscow airport waiting to make his escape to Ecuador, can rest a little easier.

NFL SCANDAL

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez will appear in court Thursday to appeal a judge's order that he be held without bail—after being charged with first-degree murder in the death of his friend Odin Lloyd. The case against Hernandez was based, in part, on the victim's final text messages. At 3:07 a.m. on June 17, Lloyd texted his sister, "Did you see who I was with?" When she asked, "Who?" He replied, "NFL. Just so you know." Roughly 16 minutes after sending that first text, Lloyd was shot to death in what prosecutors are arguing was an "execution-style shooting," orchestrated by Hernandez. A judge handed the 23-year-old football player—who was cut from his team merely hours after his arrest—five weapons charges Wednesday on top of a murder charge. If convicted, he may face life in prison.

UM, WHAT?

Did Rick Perry not get the memo that he should be taking State Sen. Wendy Davis seriously? The Texas governor on Thursday tried to knock down Davis, who staged a 13-hour filibuster on Tuesday night to kill a restrictive abortion bill that Perry has vowed to sign. At the National Right to Life conference on Thursday, Perry launched into a description of Davis, saying she was "the daughter of a single woman" and a "teenage mother herself" but still graduated from Harvard Law School. As if that isn't passive-aggressively insulting in itself, get ready for what followed. "It is just unfortunate that she hasn't learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters." Davis quickly responded to Perry, saying "Rick Perry's statement is without dignity and tarnishes the office he holds." Perry has called for a special legislative session on Monday to pass the abortion bill.
