Cheat Sheet - Are You a Sociopath?

Today: The Supreme Court's Ruling and the End of the Civil Rights Era , Putin: Snowden's in Moscow Airport , Supremes Rule on Cherokee Adoption
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

MAYBE!

A candid new book from an avowed sociopath has stirred up an awkward debate: perhaps all of us have a bit of the personality disorder. The Daily Beast's Caitlin Dickson on why that may not be such a bad thing.

SCOTUS

In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court today struck down a key portion of the Voting Rights Act, essentially finding that discrimination has all but disappeared at the polls. The decision is a big deal, writes constitutional scholar Adam Winkler—and it's dead wrong.

FOUND HIM

He would know. Vladimir Putin says that Edward Snowden is in a Moscow airport. The Russian president says that the National Security Agency leaker will not be extradited to the United States because he hasn't committed any crimes in Russia. Snowden was supposed to fly from Moscow to Cuba on Monday, though his seat was empty when the plane took off. Cold War, anyone?

HERITAGE

The Supreme Court didn't just rule on the Voting Rights Act on Tuesday. In another landmark ruling, the Supreme Court declared that a young girl adopted by white parents did not have to be returned to her biological father simply because he is an American Indian. The girl had been adopted by Matt and Melanie Capobianco, but a family court had ordered they return her to her biological father, Dusten Brown, who is Cherokee. Brown had argued he should have custody according to the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, which was written to prevent many Native American families from being split up. He took custody of the girl in 2011, when she was 2 years old. The Supreme Court did not give custody back to the Capobiancos, but rather threw out the court decision awarding Brown custody. The case was chronicled in a memorable episode of the podcast Radiolab, which is worth a listen now if you haven't heard.

HOT HOT HOT

Alaska is more known for its rough winters than for hot summers, but this year the state is being pummeled by a record-breaking heat wave. Temperatures have soared into the 90s just after the state experienced a record-breaking cold snap. That one-two punch melted large amounts of snow around the state, leading to large floods. Much of Alaska has been flagged for wildfire warnings. Meteorologists are asking people not to throw cigarettes on the ground. The state has also banned fireworks in many areas.
