CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

OPERATIONS
1. Afghanistan's Role in bin Laden Raid

As debate heats up in Congress over the timetable of drawing down troops
in Afghanistan after the death of Osama bin Laden, The Daily Beast's
Bruce Riedel says the U.S. raid into Pakistan's heartland that killed
the al Qaeda leader was possible only because America and NATO are
engaged in Afghanistan. The crucial linkage between our Afghan war
policy and President Obama's goal of defeating al Qaeda was underscored
by the Navy SEALs' mission. Simply put, we can't put pressure on al
Qaeda without Afghanistan operating bases, and we clearly can't trust
Pakistan to handle al Qaeda alone.

MENDING FENCES
2. Obama to Push New Muslim Outreach

President Obama is planning to renew Muslim outreach in the coming days,
in order to appeal to the Muslim world after the death of Osama bin
Laden. A senior U.S. official tells The Wall Street Journal that Obama
will deliver the message as part of a wide-ranging speech as early as
next week when he visits Europe. He will argue that the Muslim world is
at a crossroads, with bin Laden representing the old way and the
democratic uprisings in Egypt, Libya, and elsewhere representing the
future. The U.S. is having its diplomats sing a similar song on Arab
television and radio. The Obama administration is undecided, however, on
whether to lay out a concrete Israel-Palestine peace plan.

MIDDLE EAST
3. Syria Detains 10,000 Protesters

The Syrian crackdown shows no signs of abating: The New York Times says
10,000 demonstrators have been detained in the past few days. Meanwhile,
tanks shelled the nation's third-largest city, Homs, focusing their fire
on a residential district Wednesday. The Syrian government has widened
its offensive in recent days, including to several villages in the
country's south.

SPLITTING UP
4. Schwarzenegger Speaks Out on Separation

Arnold Schwarzenegger addressed his separation from his longtime wife,
Maria Shriver, at an event in Los Angeles. "We both love each other very
much ... and we are taking it one day at a time," he said, noting that
he had spoken to her just an hour earlier. The New York Daily News says
Shriver walked out on Schwarzenegger a few weeks ago, but the couple
still sees each other "all the time" - including their wedding
anniversary and Mother's Day. TMZ's picture of the split isn't nearly as
amicable: The gossip site says Shriver was contemplating separation for
years and found Schwarzenegger "impossible" to live with.

TROUBLING
5. Gaddafi's Goons Turning Up Dead

Two of Muammar Gaddafi's former interrogators in Benghazi - men known
for their brutality - have turned up dead within days of each other in
farmland in the city's outskirts, according to the New York Times. Their
murders raise the possibility of death squads stalking Gaddafi's former
henchmen in the rebels' capital city. Rebels have already begun rounding
up people they accuse of being Gaddafi loyalists; they deny, however,
any role in the murders and say they suspect Islamists who have been
freed from prison and are seeking to settle the score.
