CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

EXCLUSIVE
1. Congress' Jetset Hypocrites

With America's economy in the gutter, lawmakers pledge to cut back -
except, apparently, when it comes to fancy trips around the globe at the
expense of taxpayers and special interests. Since January, legislators
have taken more than 200 trips financed by private groups, costing more
than $1 million, The Daily Beast's Laura Colarusso reports - double the
amount spent during the first five months of 2010.

SCANDALS
2. Weiner Said to Mull Resignation

The Democratic Party leadership may have gotten through to Rep. Anthony
Weiner: The disgraced congressman is considering handing in his
resignation, a "source close to the congressman" tells the New York
Daily News. TMZ released new semi-nude photos of Weiner in the
congressional gym, over the weekend, and the House Democrats' number
two, Steny Hoyer, joined Nancy Pelosi, in calling for his resignation.
The Daily News' source says Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, is encouraging
him to stay in Congress.

CONFRONTATION
3. U.S. Turns Back N. Korean Ship: Report

Two weeks ago, the United States Navy blocked a North Korean ship from
delivering suspected missile technology to Myanmar. The U.S. intercepted
the ship near Shanghai and asked four times to board before finally
getting permission; the standoff lasted several days. A similar
confrontation earned much more media attention two years ago. Last year,
a similar suspected shipment made it from North Korea to Myanmar.

BASKETBALL
4. Dallas Mavericks Win NBA Finals

The Dallas Mavericks won their first NBA title on Sunday night in a
close game (105-95) with the Miami Heat - and on the Heat's home floor.
It was an act of revenge for the Mavericks, who lost to the Heat in the
2006 finals. "Tonight, we got vindication," said Mavericks guard Jason
Terry, who scored 27 points in the final game. The Mavericks won four of
the series' last five games. It was a tough loss for the Heat,
particularly for Miami's secret weapon, LeBron James. After a stellar
season with 72 total wins for his team, James has yet to win an NBA
title.

2012
5. GOP Candidates Set for Debate

The top GOP presidential contenders sat out last month's first
Republican presidential debate, but they'll duke it out Monday night at
the next debate in Manchester, New Hampshire. Mitt Romney, Michele
Bachmann, and Newt Gingrich - all of whom skipped last month's debate -
will be among the seven presidential candidates to take the stage,
joining Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, and Ron Paul. Notably
absent still is John Huntsman, who is expected to formally declare his
candidacy soon.

Smarter Organics-Based Displays Provide Visual Realism
Colin Johnson recently wrote about the increased use of organic light-emitting diode displays. He noted that they are thinner and lighter than LCDs, can be deposited on flexible plastic substrates, and can display almost perfect blacks, since they do not use backlights. Check it out.

Also, we invite you to register for two upcoming Smarter Technology editorial eSeminars. The first takes place Thursday, June 16, at 9:00 a.m. Pacific / noon Eastern. This Web-based 60-minute program, titled "Becoming an Analytics-Driven Organization," will provide you with vital information about the importance of embracing business analytics to make better business decisions. Register for this seminar by clicking here.

The second takes place June 20, at 9 a.m. Pacific / noon Eastern. This Web-based 60-minute program, titled "Smarter Commerce: Making Your Data Work Harder," will discuss how to tie together the right data storage strategy, business intelligence tools, and customer relationship management systems to make timely and intelligent business decisions. Preventing avoidable opioid-related deaths top priority for pain medicine field

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:44 PM PDT

Deaths related to prescription opioid therapy are under intense scrutiny, prompting those in pain medicine -- clinicians, patient advocates, and regulators -- to understand the causes behind avoidable mortality in legitimately treated patients. Studies reporting on statistics, causes, and adverse events involving opioid treatment are now available in a special supplement of the journal Pain Medicine.

Routine screening for autism not needed, researchers say

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:44 PM PDT

In a new study, researchers say there is "not enough sound evidence to support the implementation of a routine population-based screening program for autism." Contrary to the researchers' findings, the American Academy of Pediatrics recently recommended that screening for autism be incorporated into routine practice, such as a child's regular physician check-up, regardless of whether a concern has been raised by the parents.

Life-history traits of extinct species may be discoverable, large-scale DNA sequencing data suggest

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:44 PM PDT

Large-scale DNA sequencing data have been used to investigate a long-standing evolutionary assumption -- that DNA mutation rates are influenced by such life-history traits as the time between an individual's birth and the birth of its offspring. We are all mutants: First direct whole-genome measure of human mutation predicts 60 new mutations in each of us

Posted: 12 Jun 2011 10:27 PM PDT

How many new mutations does a child have and did most of them come from mum or dad? The first answer is that each of us typically receives 60 new mutations from our parents. Remarkably, the number of mutations passed on from a parent to a child varies between parents by as much as tenfold. These striking answers come from the first-ever direct measure of new mutations using whole human genomes.
