Given all the recent doubts about Pakistan's allegiances, this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise: The U.S. had readied itself for a fight with Pakistan following the bin Laden raid—so much so that President Obama insisted the assault force be large enough to fight a hostile local police if necessary. The White House revealed Monday that there were two teams of specialists on standby if something went wrong: one to bury bin Laden if killed and a second made up of lawyers, interrogators, and translators in case he was captured alive. One senior administration official said Monday that the CIA and the military's Joint Special Operations Command had instructions to "avoid any confrontations if at all possible," but they were authorized "to return fire to get out." In the end, only the team to dispose of the body was needed.
Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, are separating after 25 years of marriage, the couple confirmed Monday. Shriver, the daughter of the late Sargent and Eunice Shriver and a niece of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, reportedly moved out of the couple's Brentwood mansion a few weeks ago as the couple tries to figure out what is the next step in their marriage. The couple's marriage had faced rocky times before—during the 2003 campaign, Schwarzenegger faced accusations that he groped women, NBC forced Shriver to leave her reporting job when her husband took office, and she has struggled in the past few years with the deaths of both her parents and her uncle. Since Schwarzenegger left office in January, it appeared the couple was living separate lives: He quickly signed on to do three films while she moved forward on her women's empowerment website.
Some of Memphis' historic Beale St. is under water and some 400 city residents evacuated their homes Monday as the Mississippi River reached its highest level since 1937. Further havoc is expected as the Mississippi crest moves downriver, toward New Orleans where it will arrive next week. In Louisiana, the Army Corps of Engineers has already opened the Bonnet Carre spillway into a lake in order to ease pressure on the New Orleans levees. Twenty-eight of the spillway's 350 bays are now open, and all will be opened in the coming days, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune. The New Orlean's levees will face their greatest stress since Hurricane Katrina.
President Obama is heading to the border Tuesday to give a speech on immigration reform—an early attempt to rally Hispanic support for the 2012 election. He'll repeat his call for comprehensive immigration reform, including tougher enforcement and a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants; but don't expect the plan to go anywhere, as Republicans will oppose the measure. Obama will give the speech in El Paso, across the Rio Grande from the violence-plagued Ciudad Juarez. Texas Governor Rick Perry apparently sought a meeting with Obama, but they were unable to schedule it.
